This large, detailed map accompanies Wilfred Thesiger’s 1946 expedition through the tribal regions of western Arabia—then largely closed to Europeans. It records tribal territories and terrain in the early years of the Saudi state. Later recorded in his book "Arabian Sands", Thesiger regarded this traverse as one of his hardest, travelling among the Zahran, Shahran and Qahtan tribes at a moment of rapid cultural change.
