Philby, C.I.E., I.C.S. and published by the Royal Geographical Society in The Geographical Journal in 1920. Compiled from Philby’s own field surveys, the map records wadis, wells, settlements, routes, and relief across a remote and little-mapped region at a critical moment in the consolidation of Ibn Saud’s power. Harry St John Bridger Philby was one of the most influential British Arabists and explorers of the period, later becoming a close adviser to Ibn Saud and converting to Islam; he was also the father of Kim Philby, notorious British Intelligence officer, Soviet double agent, and member of the Cambridge Five. The map reflects Britain’s strategic and scholarly interest in Arabia in the aftermath of the First World War and remains an important primary document of early twentieth-century exploration.
