Massive 19th Century Sèvres Porcelain 'Labors of Cupid' Circular Tray
France, 1870s, with blue painted interlaced 'L's' underglaze mark
This massive 19th-century Sèvres porcelain 'Labors of Cupid' circular tray, made in France in the 1870s, is a masterwork of artistry and elegance. Measuring 18.75 inches in diameter with a 1.75-inch high rim, the tray features a stunning bleu céleste background finely decorated with gilt florals. The outer rim is adorned in the 18th-century Sèvres style, featuring cartouches of scattered trophies such as sheet music, ewers, horns, spears, helmets, and other elements, alternating with continuous undulating vignettes of garden florals.
At the center of the tray, a cobalt and gilt-engraved and enameled neoclassical flower head serves as a focal point. Surrounding this are ten draped, frolicking putti in a continuous procession, depicted in an elaborate garden landscape filled with chariots, torches, garlands of flowers, urns, goats, cymbals, and more. This richly detailed scene captures the playful and romantic spirit of Cupid's labor.
The tray is marked on the back with the blue painted interlaced 'L's' underglaze mark. This work is an exceptional example of fine French porcelain, the perfect addition to any interior or for collectors and connoisseurs of antique French porcelain.
