Doulton Burslem Blush Ivory Three-Piece Tea Set with Apple Blossom Decoration, 1889
England, Dated by Registration to 1889
Teapot: 8" W x 5.5" H x 5" D
Creamer: 4.5" W x 4" H
Sugar: 6" W x 3.75" H
An exquisite example of Doulton Burslem's Blush Ivory line, this three-piece tea set showcases the naturalistic elegance of the Aesthetic and Rococo Revival movements in late 19th-century English ceramics. Each piece is delicately molded with swirling scrolls and foliate relief, finished in a soft blush ivory glaze, and hand-painted with sprays of white and pink apple blossoms, a motif symbolic of spring renewal.
The interiors of the creamer and sugar bowl are lavishly gilded, a luxury feature intended for high-style tea service. The teapot's lid is capped with a sculptural floral finial, and all forms exhibit the organic asymmetry characteristic of the period.
Marked on the base with the Doulton Burslem crowned cartouche and British registration number 115010, dating the design to 1889. Also present is the artist's monogram "LJC."
