Description
A rare and exquisite Paris Exposition Universelle casket from 1900, capturing the grandeur of Belle Époque Paris beneath a domed glass lid. Unlike the more common souvenir boxes of the period, this one features a brilliantly saturated chromolithograph "” a jewel-like print layered with color that glows under curved glass as if lit from within.
The scene depicts the monumental pavilions of the Exposition: soaring arches, intricate ironwork, gilded ornament, and fluttering flags. When viewed through the domed top, the image becomes almost dimensional "” a tiny world preserved in glass.
The box is framed in finely detailed ormolu (gilt brass), with scalloped edging, rosettes, and raised feet. All side panels are original beveled glass with their authentic silvering and gentle age-softening that collectors prize. The interior retains its tufted silk cushion, beautifully worn with time, holding the memory of more than a century.
Pieces like this belong to a special category of Parisian hybrid souvenirs "” where photography, chromolithography, or hand-tinted imagery were paired with fine ormolu frames to create miniature treasure caskets. Collectors love them because the imagery seems to shift and deepen as the light moves across the domed glass, almost like stained-glass in miniature.
A true gem for collectors of Exposition memorabilia, French Belle Époque design, ormolu caskets, or anyone captivated by the romance of fin-de-siècle Paris.
