Description
English Victorian Wedgwood Majolica Jardiniere With Lion Mask And Caryatid Handles
This English Wedgwood majolica jardiniere (cachepot) is a boldly modeled Victorian statement piece, combining high-gloss cobalt blue and turquoise glazes with amber and ochre accents in an exuberant Aesthetic Movement palette. The scalloped rim is punctuated by turquoise boss medallions, while a crisp turquoise Greek key meander band wraps the shoulder, giving the vessel a deliberate Neoclassical architecture. At the front, a vigorous lion-mask mascaron projects in high relief, its open mouth clenching a bamboo-form ring handle that visually "ties" into the flanking fruiting garlands"”leafy sprays with plump pink berries"”adding a naturalistic counterpoint to the geometric border work. On either side, figural caryatid-style female heads (classical bust terminals with swept hair and blue headbands) function as sculptural handle mounts, reinforcing the period's fascination with antiquity translated into richly colored glazed earthenware.
The body's rounded, urn-like form rises from a stepped, fluted turquoise foot with a warm ochre outer band, a base treatment that reads as both architectural and theatrical"”ideal for use as a majolica planter, a decorative jardiniere, or a grand cachepot for palms, ferns, and conservatory displays. The underside is reported with a Wedgwood mark, supporting an English manufacture consistent with late 19th-century Wedgwood majolica production.
