Description
Grand River Landscape: Chinese Export Blue & White Porcelain Large Platter
Circa 1775
An impressive and substantial Chinese Export porcelain serving platter (large dish), dating to the Qianlong period.
The dish features a canted rectangular form and is decorated in vibrant underglaze blue. The central well displays a vast, detailed river landscape (shanshui), depicting a series of islands connected by a zigzag bridge. The scene is populated with multi-story pagodas, willow trees, and figures traversing the paths, while boats drift on the water against a backdrop of distant mountains.
The decoration is framed by a "spearhead" band at the well. The wide rim is lavishly painted with an elaborate border featuring complex botanical scrollwork and diaper patterns, interspersed with large, stylized pomegranate motifs (symbols of abundance) at the corners and sides.
Measurements:
Width: 18 inches (45.7 cm)
Depth: 15 inches (38.1 cm)
Height: 1 3/4 inches (4.45 cm)
Historical Context:
Produced during the peak of the China Trade in the late 18th century, large platters of this size were essential components of the massive dinner services commissioned by European aristocracy. The landscape depicted here is a precursor to the "Willow Pattern" that would later become ubiquitous in English ceramics. The inclusion of pomegranates in the border is significant, as the fruit represents fertility and the hope for many generations of offspring in Chinese symbology.
