Description
This monumental late 19th-century Japanese Satsuma palace vase is a striking example of Kyoto export artistry from the Meiji period. Standing over two feet tall, the vase features finely hand-painted court figures in elaborate brocade robes engaged in a formal audience scene, alternating with lush peony garden panels accented by butterflies.
The shoulder is adorned with a raised gilt phoenix medallion symbolizing imperial nobility, surrounded by intricate geometric and textile-inspired borders. Every face and garment detail is individually hand rendered, demonstrating the skilled studio workmanship characteristic of higher-quality Satsuma produced for Western interiors during the 1880–1905 export period.
The softly crackled ivory ground and richly layered gold decoration create exceptional depth and warmth. The vase was designed to be viewed in the round, making it an ideal statement piece for an entry hall, staircase landing, or large room setting.
