This refined French Empire-style bouillotte lamp is an early 20th-century revival piece, executed circa 1925 and inspired by the lighting forms of the Napoleonic period. The lamp is distinguished by its dark green tole shade, centered with a gilt Napoleonic eagle shown standing upon thunderbolts and laurel branches"”an emblem of imperial authority, military power, and classical lineage.
The bouillotte lamp form originated in late 18th- and early 19th-century France and was traditionally used on card tables, writing desks, and bibliothèque furnishings. Its characteristic half-shade was designed to direct light downward while shielding the eyes from glare. This example retains that historical configuration, fitted with two opposing candle-style sockets adapted for electricity, preserving the appearance of the original candlelit form.
The shade is trimmed with fine gilt edging and surmounted by an adjustable brass armature with arrow-form finial, a detail closely associated with Empire design and martial symbolism. Below, the oval base rests on paw feet and supports two faux-candle uprights decorated with gilt laurel garlands, framing a central vertical stem that anchors the composition. The contrast between the deep green ground and warm gilt accents is both striking and historically appropriate to Empire revival taste.
While rooted in Neoclassical tradition, the explicit use of the eagle, laurel wreaths, arrows, and military ornament firmly identifies this lamp as Empire in inspiration rather than generic Neoclassical. Such revival pieces were popular in France during the interwar period, reflecting renewed interest in national history and classical imperial imagery.
Traditionally associated with desks and library tables, this bouillotte lamp is equally effective on a console, side table, or credenza, where its sculptural profile and rich color palette can be appreciated as both a functional light source and a decorative object.
A handsome and well-proportioned example of French Empire Revival lighting, offering historical character, symbolic depth, and versatile placement.
