English Edwardian Silver-Plated Epergne by Copper & Fry, C & F EPNS, 11 Pieces, circa 1901–1915
An elegant and whimsically detailed English Edwardian silver-plated epergne, marked C & F EPNS for Copper & Fry, executed in the early 20th century. This sculptural centerpiece survives complete in its original 11-piece configuration.
The epergne is arranged around a circular base measuring approximately 13 inches in diameter and rising to 14 inches in height, with a tall central column issuing gracefully curved arms. The upper tier supports three trumpet-form vases, each approximately 3.25 inches in diameter, intended for floral display. Below, three two-piece cachepot assemblies are cradled within circular arm supports; each set comprises a removable pot (approximately 3.75 inches in diameter × 3 inches high) resting on a conforming underplate (approximately 4.5 inches in diameter).
The design is distinguished by its playful naturalism, a hallmark of Edwardian decorative silver. The underplates are modeled as stylized lily pads, while the pots and trumpet vases adopt gently flared, organic profiles that convincingly echo botanical forms. Subtle repoussé leaf details appear at select junctions, reinforcing the garden-inspired theme while maintaining the symmetry, balance, and restraint favored during the Edwardian period.
Beyond its traditional role as a dining table centerpiece, this epergne lends itself beautifully to use on a sideboard, console, library table, or entry hall, where its sculptural form and reflective surface can be appreciated from all angles. The silver-plated surface retains a soft polish with age-appropriate wear, enhancing the modeling and dimensionality of the individual components.
Copper & Fry produced quality silver-plated hollowware for the English domestic market, and this example reflects a thoughtful combination of craftsmanship, function, and decorative whimsy. A rare and visually engaging survival, retaining all original elements, it offers both versatility and presence in traditional or contemporary interiors.
