Pair Jansen Style French Gilt Tôle Palm Tree Two-Light Wall Sconces, Circa 1960s
France, mid-20th century
32 in. H × 16 in. W × 7 in. D
This impressive pair of monumental French wall sconces is sculpted in the form of stylized palm trees, masterfully executed in hand-worked gilt tôle (painted and gilded sheet metal). Rising over thirty inches in height, each sconce presents a cylindrical palm trunk surmounted by a crown of dramatically arched, individually cut, and hand-shaped fronds, creating a striking silhouette and a vivid sense of movement and exoticism.
The palm motif has long been associated with victory, paradise, and tropical luxury and became especially popular in French decorative arts of the mid-20th century, particularly within Hollywood Regency, Riviera, and Palm Beach–inspired interiors. These sconces reflect the same tradition seen in the celebrated palm-form lighting produced by Parisian workshops and decorators working in the spirit of Maison Jansen and Maison Baguès, where theatrical scale, botanical fantasy, and sculptural metalwork were combined for grand residential and hôtel particulier commissions.
Each sconce is fitted with two candle-style light arms issuing gracefully from the trunk, the scrolling gilt arms terminating in circular bobeches and original candle sleeves. The surfaces retain a richly aged gilt patina, with subtle variations, rubbing, and oxidation consistent with age and hand-applied finishes, contributing to the warmth and authenticity of the pieces. The reverse reveals the original blackened metal backs and hand-finished construction.
The scale, sculptural modeling, and complexity of the palm crowns strongly suggest that these were conceived as decorative statement fixtures, possibly for a salon, stair hall, or exhibition interior rather than standard production lighting. Their commanding presence and architectural proportions make them ideal focal elements for a grand entry or dining room or for flanking a mirror or doorway.
The pair remains structurally sound and presents beautifully, with minor surface wear and patina appropriate to age. Professionally rewired and ready for installation.
An exceptional and rare example of French botanical-themed wall lighting, combining mid-century glamour with timeless sculptural elegance.
