Description
Pair of Chinese Canton-Style Blue and White Palm Tree Porcelain Vases, Now as Lamps
This elegant pair of Chinese Canton-style blue and white porcelain vases exemplifies the refined decorative language of southern Chinese export wares, adapted here as sculptural table lamps. The baluster form shows a confident, classical silhouette, resting on ebonized wood bases that provide visual weight and contrast while elevating the porcelain to furniture scale.
The decoration is executed in underglaze cobalt blue, featuring a serene riverbank landscape anchored by stylized palm trees, flowering plants, and meandering water motifs. In Canton export vocabulary, palm-like trees"”often freely interpreted rather than botanically exact"”evoke ideals of abundance, tranquility, and exotic landscapes intended to appeal to Western tastes. The winding river symbolizes continuity and harmony, while flowering shrubs reference renewal and prosperity. Scattered brushstroke accents and layered tonal blues reflect the painterly, workshop-based approach characteristic of Canton production rather than the more rigid symmetry of imperial wares.
A continuous band of scrolling foliage and cloud motifs encircles the shoulder and foot, framing the central scene and reinforcing balance and movement. The soft gradations of cobalt"”from deep indigo to pale wash"”demonstrate skilled control of pigment, lending depth and atmosphere to the composition.
Now professionally converted into lamps, the vases are fitted with brass sockets and raised on turned blackened wood bases measuring approximately 5 inches in diameter. Each lamp measures approximately 20 inches high to the socket and 16 inches to the top of the porcelain vase, with an 8-inch diameter body. They have been fully rewired and are equipped with inline on/off switches for modern convenience.
Both decorative and functional, this pair bridges Chinese export tradition and contemporary interior use, offering a timeless accent suitable for classic, coastal, or eclectic interiors.
