Description
A substantial and richly decorated 19th-century Japanese Imari porcelain platter or underplate, dating to the late Edo to early Meiji period (circa 1860–1885), created for export to the Western market during the height of Victorian fascination with Japanese decorative arts.
This faceted, octagonal plaque features a classic Imari palette: deep underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, celadon green, and gilt accents. The central oval reserve depicts a traditional landscape scene with architectural elements, pagodas, water and junk ships, and stylized trees, framed by an elaborate border of florals, moths and butterflies "” motifs highly favored in export wares of the period.
The weight and thickness of the porcelain body are consistent with 19th-century Arita production. The decoration is entirely hand-painted, with layered enamels and visible gilded detailing.
The reverse reveals early metal staple repairs "” a traditional 19th-century method of restoration used prior to modern adhesives. These historic repairs confirm both age and that the piece was valued enough to preserve rather than discard. The staples now form part of the object's story, offering visible evidence of its long life.
A strong example of export-era Imari with authentic age and visible provenance.
