Vibrant post-impressionist oil on canvas depicting a white stucco multi-story villa with green shutters and double doors, enveloped in lush garden foliage with flowering shrubs and a luminous golden tree. Bold impasto brushwork throughout. Subject and palette are fully consistent with Schiefer's pre-WWII South of France period.
Signed lower right in black paint (legible "Johannes Schiefer" in cursive). Housed in a substantial carved gesso frame; frame shows age wear at corners with some losses to gesso.

Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at age 19, studied at the Düsseldorf Academy and the Beaux Arts in Paris, later the Villa Medici in Rome. He settled in Nice, France, painted extensively through the South of France and Adriatic coast, and emigrated to New York in 1942. He later became curator at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, NY. His daughter is actress Joanna Miles. The Kennedy family collected his work, and Ethel Kennedy commissioned him directly after a chance encounter in 1964.
