Rare striking original hand-colored steel engraving of William Penn's Treaty with the Indians, the legendary 1683 meeting at which Penn negotiated peace with the Lenape people upon founding the Province of Pennsylvania in North America. The caption at the bottom reads: "William Penn's Treaty with the Indians, when he founded the Province of Pennsylvania in North America, 1683."
The print was engraved by John Hall after the celebrated painting by Benjamin West (1771), one of the most iconic images in American colonial history. The lower inscription notes it was engraved from the original painting belonging to the late Thomas Penn, Esquire, and dedicated by John Boydell, the prominent 18th-century London print publisher.
