EHR Etienne (1941-2011) worked with both watercolors, oils and acrylics and his paintings can be found in museums and private collections around the world. Many of his works - such as Tropical Fusion - were inspired by his time in the Florida Keys, noted for its rich colors, diversity of aquatic life, and lush vegetation. Though born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Etienne spent most of his childhood in Quebec, Canada, then graduated from the Art Center College of Design in L.A., California. He is best known for his vibrant and expressive works and drew inspiration from the natural beauty and cultural diversity of Key West, in particular. He arrived to Key West in the early 2000s and quickly became enmeshed in the island's artistic community.
Interesting Trivia:
Etienne worked in numerous mediums and his work as a water colorist was considered world-class.
Very particular, Etienne had a penchant for two specific papers made in France and India, which he believed best set off his use of bold colors. He also used handmade squirrel hair brushes that he curled at the ends to create different size strokes and he pioneered a single stroke of color versus overlapping which he dubbed "single lapping."
In addition to his paintings, Etienne's work included graphic design and animation. An IMAX production spotlighted some of his paintings on the super giant screen.
The popular artist died one week shy of his 70th birthday.
