A substantial and whimsical Italian ceramic tureen and cover, dating to the mid-20th century (circa 1960s).

This piece is a masterful example of trompe-l'Å“il (literally "deceive the eye"), naturalistically modeled in the form of a large, leafy cabbage resting upon a matching underplate designed as a bed of leaves. The molding is highly textured, capturing the crinkled veins and organic irregularities of the vegetable, while the vibrant green glaze pools in the recesses to create depth and realism. The upper leaves of the cabbage form the removable cover, cleverly integrating the handle into the foliage design.

Markings:

The underside bears an underglaze red mark: a star and a squiggle incorporating the number "6" (likely a shape or pattern number).
