Description
The Story
Acquired from the estate of a well-traveled collector, this authentic Nomoli stone figure is a rare piece of West African antiquity, traditionally attributed to the Sapi or Sherbro peoples of Sierra Leone. Carved from native steatite (soapstone), these figures"”also known as nomolisia (found spirits)"”are among the oldest known art forms from the Upper Guinea coast, often predating European contact in the 15th century.
Artistic Detail
The figure features the classic diagnostic traits of the Sapi style: a powerful, crouched posture, an oversized cranium, and deeply expressive, bulging eyes and nose. The stone exhibits a beautiful, natural patina and surface pitting, consistent with being buried in riverbanks or rice fields for centuries before its "rediscovery."
Styling Note
A true collector's item, this primitive sculpture brings a sense of grounded history and organic texture to a modern bookshelf, mantel, or pedestal. It pairs beautifully with Mid-Century Modern decor or Brutalist interior styles.
