English Prattware Figures of Cows with Attendants,

This is a charming and characterful pair of English pottery figures, executed in the bold, folk-art style known as Prattware. Dating from the Regency period, circa 1810–1820, these figures are attributed to the potteries of Yorkshire, which were known for producing large, expressive animal models.

Each piece features a large, realistically modeled cow standing on a rectangular base. The cows are distinctively painted in the signature Prattware palette, with large, bright ochre (orange-yellow) and black spots standing out against the white body. Accompanying each cow is a small attendant figure, standing close to the animal: one cow is attended by a male figure in a hat, and the other by a female figure holding flowers or a basket. A small spotted dog or lamb rests at the feet of each central human figure, completing the idyllic pastoral scene. The base is decorated with characteristic random sponged patches of blue, ochre, and black, simulating grass and earth.

Each figure stands 5 3/4 inches (14.6 cm) high x 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide x 3 inches (7.6 cm) deep.

These cow groups were tremendously popular decorative items in early 19th-century homes, functioning as mantelpiece ornaments that celebrated British agriculture and rural prosperity. The Prattware style"”defined by the use of distinct, vibrant underglaze colors applied in broad strokes"”appealed to the middle and working classes who valued cheerful, domestically themed figurines. While sometimes simplified in form, these figures represent a key aspect of English folk art ceramics, translating idealized country life into permanent ceramic form. The Yorkshire potteries were especially known for producing these large, striking animal models, which are now highly collectible for their naive charm and bold coloration.
