Description
Imari Brilliance: Spode Porcelain "Pattern 967" Chamberstick,
Circa 1806–10
A luxurious Spode porcelain chamberstick, dating to the Regency period (circa 1806–1810), decorated in the factory's most celebrated and commercially successful design: Pattern 967.
This striking "Japan" or "Imari" pattern features a lavish Chinoiserie garden scene rendered in a rich palette of deep cobalt blue, iron-red, and emerald green, all heightened by profuse honey-gold gilding. The form consists of a circular drip pan and a central column with a flared rim. A practical and specific design detail is the inclusion of three small holes in the side of the nozzle, ingeniously designed to facilitate the removal of spent wax. The piece is finished with an elegant, fully gilded scroll loop handle.
Markings: Underside: Painted in iron-red script with "Spode / 967".
Measurements:
Width: 5 inches (12.7 cm)
Height: 1 3/4 inches (4.45 cm)
Condition: Excellent antique condition. No repairs or restoration. The gilding and enamel decoration remain in a good, unrubbed state. On the base there is a line from use.
Historical Context:
Introduced around 1804, Pattern 967 became Spode's most popular pattern in the "Japan" taste. During the Napoleonic Wars, imports of Asian porcelain were restricted, leading British factories to create their own versions of Japanese Imari wares to satisfy domestic demand. Spode's interpretation was unique for its addition of a distinct green enamel to the traditional red, blue, and gold palette, creating a richness that defined the opulence of the Prince Regent's era.
