Description
A sculptural set of four Chinese burl root wood brush pots with dramatic swirling grain and organic tree-trunk form.
A striking set of four Chinese brush pots carved from natural burl root wood, each vessel displaying dramatic swirling grain and warm amber and deep brown tones. Resembling miniature tree trunks, their organic, sculptural forms embody the wabi-sabi appreciation for natural materials and imperfect beauty.
Traditionally known as bitong, brush pots were used on a scholar's desk to hold calligraphy brushes and writing tools. Examples carved from root wood were especially admired for their natural character and the way their forms evoke landscapes, rock formations, and ancient tree trunks.
Each vessel has been hollowed from a solid section of burl root and polished to reveal the lively figure of the wood. While unified as a group, every pot is slightly different in shape and grain, making the set particularly appealing when displayed together as a sculptural grouping.
Today these vessels work beautifully as pencil cups, small planters or vases (water-proof holders would need to be added), or decorative desk objects. Their organic character makes them especially appealing in organic modern interiors, where natural materials and sculptural forms are celebrated.
A handsome grouping for a desk, bookshelf, or table vignette.
