An interesting family archive of British portraiture, comprised of a large variety of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, and a group of larger albumen and early silver prints, related to the Hicks and Morley families, among other extended family members, with a variety of primarily British studios from South London, Kent, and Hampshire; many inscribed with names and dates verso. Approximately 100 cartes-de-visite, by studios including Mayall, Regent Street; Sarony, Leeds; Negretti & Zambra, Crystal Palace; Maull & Polyblank, London; Elliott & Fry, London; W Turner, Camberwell; The London School of Photography; Henry Spink, Brighton; Goodman & Schmidt, Margate; A.P.Chambers, Clapham; David Rees, Clapham; C & T Henderson, Islington; M. Allen, Dublin; J Page, Croydon; J Grey, Devon; The London Stereoscopic Company; E. Austin, Brixton; E. Flukes, Bath; Lombardi & Co., London; each measuring approx. 9.5 x 6cm.
Among the group is also a group of approx. 40 cabinet cards, picture postcards, and mounted studio prints of varying sizes, most mounted to card and by British studios, one by Tosca, Brisbane, Queensland; including an interesting group of seven mounted prints of costumed young girls, identified on two mounts as 'Bell Morley', all by C.F. Treble studio, Brixton.
Also included are one ninth plate daguerreotype (hand coloured) portrait of James Hicks (surgeon); one quarter plate daguerreotype of Henry Hicks; three small tintypes measuring 7.5 x 6.5cm, (5) sixth plate ambrotypes (two hand-painted), including a sihouette of a woman in costume; one hand-coloured quarter plate ambrotype also depiciting James Hicks; and one ninth plate ambrotype of a young girl.
