Description
This MUSEUM QUALITY cotton 1840's/1850's indigo blue & white flying geese quilt is all hand pieced and hand quilted, with unusual appliqued charms in the background, including flowers, spade, shamrock, hearts and other symbols. A cotton tag attached to the back with faint pencil markings identifies the quilt as being associated with the Oddfellows lodge.
It measures 86" X 88" and is in very good condition, with the occasional small, faint spot, slight color variation in some of the blue, and no wear.
There is quilting around the piecework and applique and in arc designs in the background, all at an even 8-10 stitches to the inch.
The back is white, the hand stitched binding is the same indigo blue used in the interior, and the batting is thin. You can see cotton seed residue inside when you hold the quilt up to the light. The quilt came out of New York state.
The UNUSUAL COMBINATION of piecework and applique make this FOLKY 19th century COLLECTOR'S QUILT stand out!
