Additional Information: Cotton 1890's red and white "Nani Kauai O Ka Mokihana" applique quilt, all hand appliqued and hand quilted, with vibrant turkey red fabric.
The pattern name translates to "Beautiful Kauaʻi of the Mokihana," paying homage to the island of Kauaʻi and its symbolic plant. The design centers on the mokihana (Melicope anisata), a green berry endemic to the forests of Kauaʻi. It is the official island material for leis and is prized for its intense anise (licorice) scent.This specific pattern is a "place name" quilt, intended to honor the beauty and identity of Kauaʻi. Traditional Hawaiian quilts often serve as a "visual lei," offering a blessing of love (aloha) and connection to the land. The Mokihana (the berry of Kaua'i) motif is merged with the Hale Kahiki (pineapple), with the four large, feathered elements in the corners and the four radiating from the center are classic pineapple motifs. In Hawaiian quilting, the pineapple is a symbol of hospitality and "warmth of the home." The high density of the pattern—with very little "white space" showing—indicates it was made by a master quilter.

There are ellipse and circular designs quilted throughout at 7 stitches to the inch. The back is white, the machine stitched binding is the same solid red used in the interior, and the batting is thin. You can see cotton seed residue inside when you hold the quilt up to the light.
