Description
A small collection of 4 Staffordshire Children’s Plates with American Civil War themes. The plates (from top to bottom of the photo, left to right) include: 1) 2 soldiers in hand-to-hand combat, one with a sword (saber), the other with a rifle (musket); hand-colored transfer with a molded vine border; 7 3/8” diameter; `no marks; 2) black transfer plate, 5” diameter, with an image of General Halleck (Halleck was a senior officer in the early years of the war and became Grant’s chief of staff; 3) 5” diameter with a black transfer of Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, who was Commander of the Army of the Potomac and the Commanding officer of the Union Forces at the battle of Gettysburg; no marks, but the plate has an embossed alphabet border; 4) a 6” plate showing the “Arrival of General McClellan” (to be commander of the Union forces, presumably) in 1861, a rank he held until he was replaced in 1864 for moving too cautiously (slowly); black transfer image with a hand-colored American flag and green grass below McClellan’s horse; embossed alphabet border with red line on the very edge of the plate; no marks. Except for the surface blemish on the General Meade plate (at about 3 o’clock), all 4 plates are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, lines, or restorations.
