Beautiful pair of unique and unusual hand painted floral pottery plates by American Artist Edith Varian Cockcroft (1881-1962). The plates depict a floral motif of a lotus plant and roses.
Edith Varian Cockcroft (February 6, 1881-October 19, 1962) was a Brooklyn-born painter, designer, inventor and ceramist, who exhibited at venues including the Paris Salon, National Academy of Design and Art Institute of Chicago.
She studied with Henri Matisse, was friends with Pierre Auguste Renoir and Paul Gauguin and was influenced by their work.
Her ceramics were displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum and Montross Gallery.
She was known for portraits of nudes posed against vibrant fabric backdrops as well as landscape paintings, often depicting European seacoasts. She patented and exhibited silks and velvet's, produced ceramic dinnerware and designed clothing and theater sets. Her artworks were lauded for "boldness of decorative pattern and fearless use of color"and for their ' "character and vigor."
Her Art Pottery is rather Rare and this pair of plates are a fabulous example of her work. She was a modernist painter, potter, jewelry maker and fabric and clothing designer.
These plates belonged to my mother who received them as a gift from her employer when she retired.The plates were own by a prominent restaurant owner in Buffalo New York who collected all kinds of Art.
