Description
This is a petite 4 panel Japanese screen from the Meiji Era (18th century) with beautiful patina evident in places. Please excuse first photo- I did not realize the right side would look so dark. It's not, just a trick of the light (see pics).
Painstakingly handpainted on silver leaf, these smaller screens were mainly utilized in bedrooms as wind breakers; though they are more decor today than in their utilitarian past.
Mineral pigments were the paint choices at the time of creation, silver and gold leaf were also heavily employed as backgrounds on which the artists could craft their paintings.
Bordered by silk brocade and a wooden frame, although I do think it's possible that it may have been reframed and had hooks installed on the back to wall-mount.
Signed by original artist, although this is so old the signature has faded out (photograph 12).
72 x 36 x .75
