Western Australia is inset at lower left, with additional inset plans of Adelaide and Sydney providing detailed views of the principal settlements. The map is dedicated to Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, Surveyor General of New South Wales, and reflects the rapid expansion of settlement during the 1840s, with towns, rivers, coastlines, and overland routes marked.
