Title:1935 c. Caples Map of Reno -- RenoCartographer: R CaplesYear/Place:1935 c.Map Dimensions:12.2 X 15.7 in.Description:This is an excellent, humorous pictorial map of Reno presented in a globe shape oriented east. It is intended to advertise the Town House, a nightclub in Reno, and its signature drink, the Town House Cocktail. Created in the 1930's, the Town House Cocktail was targeted at female patrons in search of a cool cocktail without the taste of liquor. The map depicts Reno as a world of its own, centered on the Town House nightclub, "Where smart people meet." A range of establishments, buildings, streets are noted on the map, including coffee shops, boxing club, several theaters, race track, hot springs, library, post office, etc. There are humorous references to gambling and divorce, both becoming legal ca. 4 years prior. In bottom margin is printed "Town House Cocktail. Grand prize winner, 1935--Chicago National Wine & Liquor Show." Robert Caples, was one of the leading artists in Nevada at the time. This is a rare find, seldom seen at auctions and OCLC lists only two examples.
