Description:This item has two attractive woodblock maps -- of Sicily and on the other side of Elba. Sicily side graphically depicts the mountains with Mt. Etna erupting. Malta peeks into the right side of the map and Carthage / Tunis is shown at bottom. A large galley ship sails the Mediterranean. The Elba side shows the island, off the western coast of Italy, with the fortress, cities and boats in the sea. Three towns, Capoliri, S. Adrian and Marciano, are depicted in flames, likely representing the iron smelters for which the island was renowned. German text. It is from Munster's Cosmographia.
