Description
MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 58 Rimfire. NSN. Bbl. 29 3/4". This scarce 1st Model Allin Conversion of a Civil War rifled musket to a breechloader taking a rimfire cartridge has been modified by a surplus arms dealer such as Bannerman for use by school cadets. The dealer modifications notably include leaving the middle band with its swivel in the original position and a radical thinning of the wrist area which differed from the methods used at the National Armory. The 1st Allin Conversion is notably more complicated and fragile than the later trapdoor single shots. The breechblocks are unmarked and the spring for the thumb-piece is not present for this rifle. Folding rear sight with aperture is graduated to 500 yards. Stud type front sight approximately 1 1/8" behind muzzle. Bevelled lockplate dated 1864 has the spread-wing eagle and US Springfield markings. Two position tumbler. Modified hammer has bevelled edges. Walnut stock has no visible markings except for a number "7" at the bottom of the toe area. The 7 is formed by 10 steel brads. U.S. marked buttplate. Trigger guard carries the rear swivel. Flat barrel bands retained by springs. Steel nose cap. Tulip-headed ramrod with swell measures 31 5/8" long and is partly threaded. Ramrod is retained by the swell and does not have a spoon spring. CONDITION: stock has a worn arsenal rework refinish with stained marks throughout. Notable deep scratch on right side of butt. The area between the breech block and the forward end of the lock has been repaired and shows a loss of wood as the wood is very thin in this area. The metal has been cleaned bright, returning to patina with notable areas of light pitting primarily on the furniture. Three groove bore is turning dark with areas of fine pitting, but retains strong sharp lands. PROVENANCE: From the PMRB Collection. (01-28439/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
