Description
A large Ethiopian tribal cutlass with blade measuring approximately 32 inches. The handle appears to be made from an organic material potentially some sort of bone. It comes with a leather sheath that shows signs of dehydration but is still in good condition considering the significant age of the piece. There is an ornate medallion where the pommel would be that appears to be a 1780 dated Austrian Maria Theresa Thaler coin made of solid silver. It features the Austrian coat of arms on the side that is exposed and the reverse side should have a bust of Empress Maria Theresa. The text reads ARCHID BURG CO TVR 1780 which is part of the translation of her full title as Empress of the Holy Roman Empire and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia. These coins have a silver content of roughly 84% and a typical weight of 28 grams. These coins are often seen having been made into pendants and jewelry. The silver content alone on this piece is valued at nearly $90. Their are several tribal markings on the base of the blade as well. The blade is sharp and heavy, built for thrashing. These were usually reserved for leaders and warriors. Introduced in the 19th century, the Gurade is a fighting sword in the style of European sabers, with a single-edged, more moderately curved blade. Historically a symbol of a warrior's prowess, wealth, rank, and status, and can be seen in many Ethiopian paintings. Estimated shipping parcel size (LxWxH) 48 inches x 6 inches x 6 inches.
