About the artist: Khariton Platonovich Platonov was born in 1842 in the village of Vorona in the Mologa district to a family of farmers.From 1859 to 1870, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He was awarded the Academy's medals "For Achievement in Drawing"—a small silver medal in 1862, a large silver medal in 1863, and a small silver medal again in 1867.In 1870, he graduated from the Academy with the title of Class Artist, Third Degree, and was sent as a teacher to the Tsarskoye Selo District School.For his painting "Gourmand" and the study "Head of a Peasant from Kursk Province," exhibited at the 1872 Academy Exhibition, he received the title of Class Artist, Second Degree.In 1878, he received the A. F. Rzhevskaya and N. A. Demidov Gold Medal of the Council of the Imperial Academy of Arts "For Expression" for his painting "Bulgarian Boy." In 1883, he was awarded the title of First-Degree Class Artist, and in 1893, the title of Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts.In 1877, he moved to Kyiv. For twenty years, he taught painting at N. I. Murashko's Kyiv Drawing School, then at the Kiev Art College, founded in 1901 on the basis of the school.His students included the genre painter N. K. Pimonenko and the artists N. G. Burachek and M. I. Zhuk.He exhibited at the 31st and 32nd exhibitions of the Society of Traveling Art Exhibitions.He was a regular participant in exhibitions of the Imperial Academy of Arts—in Odessa in 1886 and 1887, in Kharkov and Yekaterinburg in 1887 with the painting "Cascade Foam," in Riga in 1888, in Kiev in 1888–1889 with the painting "Buy Some Berries!", and in Kazan in 1889 with the paintings "The Hired Hand" and "Oksana."I. A. Vyshnegradsky acquired the painting "The Jew Girl" for his collection in 1889.
