Description
An intricate and artful Hebe brooch designed by Georges Braque in 1962 and produced by Baron Heger de Löwenfeld in the 1965. The brooch is crafted in 18k yellow and white gold and features diamonds. It has a pin closure along with two loops to be worn as a pendant. The artist based the brooch’s design on a 1950 drawing called ‘Tête Grecque’ and the gouache ‘Bijoux de Braque’ called ‘Hebe.’ The brooch is inspired by the Greek Goddess of Youth, the daughter of Zeus. The vintage Braque Hebe pin pendant is made of 18 karat yellow and white gold and accented with round brilliant cut diamonds (G-H color, VS clarity, approximately 1.90 carats total weight). The Georges Braque Hebe pendant measures 2 ¾” x 1 ½” (7.3 x 4 cm) and weighs 22.6 grams. The pin is stamped "Bijoux de G Braque, 1/8" and it also carries French hallmarks for 18 karat gold and workshop marks. So, there were eight Hebe pins/pendants made and this one was the first one. About Georges Braque: Georges Braque, one of the most acclaimed visual artists, was mostly famed as a founder of Cubism alongside with Pablo Picasso. In his final years Braque did many birds in flight studies. Nowadays, they are sold via auctions. In the 1960s, Braque teamed up with Baron Heger de Lowenfeld, a gem cutter and entrepreneur. Together they produced Braque’s only jewelry collection called “Bijoux De Braque”. One of the themes for Braque’s jewels was flying birds. They symbolize Space and Time and appeared in many of his paintings. Braque had a concept of beauty expressed through volume, weight, and subjective impression. The whole idea of making jewelry for him was translating his artworks into three dimensional wearable sculptures. He used the themes from his graphic works and lithographs for the jewelry visuals. The pieces were massively critically acclaimed. For instance, the first exhibit called 'One hundred jewels by Georges Braque' attracted over 50,000 visitors. The French state purchased eleven pieces at the event.
