Description:GLADYS LOUISE BOWMAN FIES (1909-2005 California artist). Mid Century California watercolor Still Life with Roses in a Blue Pot, 28-1/2" x 21" sight size watercolor (framed size: 32-1/4" x 25") signed lower right: Fies. We found a smaller watercolor, a Still Life of Roses, a 21" x 15" offered for $2062.50 on sale. See photograph 11. Condition: Sold as Found, As Is. Watercolor has stains. Appear to be most noticeable on the left side. Has no glass. Frame nicks. She was well known in the San Francisco region as a watercolorist and art teacher who exhibited at art fairs, galleries and museums, including the de Young Museum. She was a member of the Society of Western Artists, Thirty and One Artist Club and San Carlos Fine Arts Association. She taught art at the San Carlos Senior Center and Adult Education with San Carlos School District.
Per Hughes: Gladys Louise Bowman Fies was a watercolorist, art teacher. Born in Kirkland, Texas on December 23, 1909. During the 1930s, Gladys married William John Fies.
After many years in Dallas, the couple later moved to northern California.
She was a pupil of Ralph Ledesma, Jade Fon, Millard Sheets, Rex Brandt, and George Post. She often gave workshops to senior centers around her home in San Mateo. She died in San Carlos, CA on December 17, 2005.
Missions were a favorite subject matter as well as floral still lifes.
