English Georgian Style Table Ornately Carved Faces and Lion Paws and Face in Manner of William Kent

Description

In the manner of grand furnishings by English architect and decorator William Kent (1685-1748) and the carver Matthias Lock (c1710-c1765), this heroic hand-carved center or library table channels all the swagger of the English Baroque period. Centered with bold masks on each side and perched on muscular lion legs, it is enriched with luxurious cornucopias from which erupt fruit and flowers. Robust swags of fruit and flowers also loop along the long sides of the table. A gadrooned edge frames the tabletop, which features an inset panel that has been hand-painted to resemble imperial red porphyry, a rare Egyptian stone that was prized by the sort of well-travelled C18th collectors who would have owned such a table.
