Description
This rare mirror with gold was chosen by Sir Humphey Wakefield to be part of the British Stately Homes Collection, reproduced by S Cavallo's Mirror Fair and distributed exclusively through the Baker Knapp and Tubbs showrooms to the decorating trade.
My husband and I were lucky to acquire it in December 2007, as Mirror Fair no longer reproduces this piece of art today.
The original antique Queen Anne verre EGLOMISE mirror was first made in the early 18th Century during English Queen Anne period (see the last photo of an antique sold by world renowned Ronald Phillips Antiques).
Also note the certificate of Authentication in one of the photos by Mirror Fair, N. 712051.
History: English mirrors were decorated with verre EGLOMISE technique in the 17th Century and early 18th Century, comprising the William and Mary, William IV, and Queen Anne periods (circa 1688 - 1714).
The border glasses were cut into thin shaped pieces to fit the concentric frame over which gold leaf was applied by the use of glair (egg white mixed with water). The design was carefully inscribed with a fine needle, the background scraped away and then overpainted with the color to show off the gold decorations.
The mirror being sold on Chairish features real gold and was made by Mirror Fair on December 2007.
