Description
May Belfrort 1959 Lithograph
Limited edition stone lithograph printed in 1959 after the 1895 impression on heavy vellum paper with a richly textured printed surface. The sheet measures approx. 28 x 22 inches and framed is 32 x 26 1/2. Stone signed (TL)and also stamped signature lower right.
Very good condition with minor creases consistent with age and handling. Recently re-framed with museum quality conservation materials. House in a simple unpretentious and elegant period frame.
May Belfort, whom [Lautrec] represented in at least ten works, had gained a reputation for corrupt innocence by appearing onstage dressed as a baby holding a black kitten in her arms, and miaowing or bleating her popular song, "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me a Bow-Wow," whose lines had a double meaning which was not lost on the French-speaking audience: I've got a pussycat, Im very fond of that (Frey, p. 382). This would have been particularly amusing for the audience, as Belfort was in an openly lesbian affair with the English dancer May Milton (see PAI-LXVII, 526). (Art Nouveau; Cat)
