Description
Antique Hemp Woven Rectangular Planter on Stand with turned spindle wood legs with slight outward shaping, geometric basket design and original metal liner.
Arts & Crafts/Transitional period (c. 1900–1930), made with hemp cord woven with braided trim stained dark with the lozenge motif in as a decorative accent in a lighter neutral shade.
Restored with stain to condition hemp and wood. A timeless piece for many rooms from an entryway, bedroom, library to covered porch or poolside.
These were made with the intention of having a potted plant, commonly ferns, placed inside the liner which would catch any runoff. Many would fill the liner with dirt-likely the reason so many liners are missing, as they rusted away. I am very happy to provide the original intact met liner with the stand!
Provenance: This item was resourced from a 1940's with report they moved into home with this piece. The reasons below strongly support a c. 1900–1930 date rather than Victorian or later mid-century.
The simplicity + hemp rope weave + lozenge motif all fit early 20th century Arts & Crafts (c.1900-1920) through 1920s–30s revival styles.
"• The fact that it was made as a planter with a metal liner supports that period: indoor planters were hugely fashionable in 1900–1930, especially with the rise of conservatories and houseplants in middle-class homes..
"• Legs often remained spindle-turned, with slight shaping but a little more refined or machined (less hand-turned irregularity).
"• Dark finishes remained popular. Dark stains were very common to harmonize with Mission Oak and Craftsman furniture.
"• Rope and woven planters were still being produced for sunrooms, conservatories, and parlors.
Galvanized Insert: The presence of a galvanized metal insert for the planter is consistent with antique plant stands designed to hold potted plants and protect the wicker from moisture.
28" high x 30" long x 9.75" wide
Metal liner measures 27.27" long x 7.5" wide x 6" deep
Condition notes: The material and structure is sound with minor wood split from nails-see photo. The hemp cord remains tight. The dark finish is worn so that the stain is lighter in most areas. This is consistent with age and use. Finish is offered as-is, in aged character condition.
*If you find that you wish the finish to be restored to a like-new dark stain, please reach out prior to purchase.
