Finely detailed and rare map of America features a decorative cartouche and a unique compass rose, circa 1769. It is particularly notable for its expansive depiction of the Mer de L'Ouest, or "Sea of the West," which is illustrated as a vast sea, comparable in size to the Mediterranean, extending from the then-known Strait of Juan de Fuca. California is portrayed as an island. The map was published by Étienne-André Philippe de Prétot, a royal censor and professor of history at the Royal Academy of Science in Paris.
