French Empire Giltwood and Gesso Overmantel Mirror. Mirror is crafted in carved wood with a gesso ground and original gilt finish, the mirror is framed by a rectilinear surround enriched with finely detailed relief ornament. The frame is decorated with classical floral and foliate motifs, including rosettes, anthemion, and scrolling acanthus, arranged in balanced, symmetrical compositions at the corners and along the rails. A beaded inner molding draws the eye inward, enhancing the mirror's vertical emphasis and lending a sense of grandeur. Overmantle mirrors were originally designed to crown fireplaces in formal salons, reflecting light and amplifying the sense of space in grand interiors.
