Description
Cast in a dense, lead (or lead-alloy) metal with a naturally oxidized slate-gray surface, this substantial cylindrical cachepot is conceived in the Neoclassical taste, its decoration organized as a continuous sculptural narrative in low relief. The upper register presents a scrolling vine-and-anthemion band punctuated by a central rosette medallion, set above a rope-molded (guilloche) border that frames the principal figural frieze. Around the body, classically draped and partially nude figures enact a bacchanalian revel, including reclining and seated attendants, a musician with a lyre, and animated companions in conversation and gesture, the modeling intentionally reminiscent of antique cameos and late-18th-century French "Clodion" revival reliefs. The lower register is anchored by a further guilloche band and a base border of repeating leaf tips, while the broad lower field is centered by an altar- or fountain-like ornament flanked by crouching animals, reinforcing the object's archaizing, archaeological aesthetic. A heavy twisted rope-form swing handle spans the rim, attached at opposing sides by cast mask-and-bust mounts that read as stylized classical heads, providing both visual punctuation and a functional lifting point. The interior shows age-appropriate wear and oxidation consistent with use as a planter liner, jardinière insert, or decorative bucket, with casting seams and surface accretions typical of leaded garden and decorative wares.
