A talented artist from an early age, Alma Held graduated from the University of Iowa where she studied art with Charles Cumming. She also studied at the Cape Cod School of Art with Charles Hawthorne and at the Academy of Design in New York. At the Academy, she won the Suydam Bronze medal for life drawing. In 1925, she began exhibiting at the Iowa Salon and earned awards for her still life and portraits. For a short period, she taught at the University of Iowa with Grant Wood, and she exhibited widely throughout the Midwest including Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
