A celebrated work, famous for its beautiful engravings based on drawings by Picart.
This is second edition (after Amsterdam), the first published in France.
Based on the one published in Amsterdam in 1723-43, but with the texts revised and expanded by Abbots Banier and Le Mascrier on the basis of new information that reached them from various Catholic missions.
The illustrations, on the other hand, largely follow those of the Dutch edition.
See Brunet I, 1743: «This edition was published under the literary direction of the Abbot Banier; but the text, both entirely revised and simply corrected, is due to the Abbot Lemascrier, as well as the new dissertations»;
Cohen-Ricci 135; Hiler 708; Lewine 414; Sander 1548.
Beautifully illustrated works depicting the rites and rituals of various beliefs but also costumes, deities, etc.
The work deals with religious practices in Asia, Africa, North and South America and Europe, including Judaism, Islam, Catholicism, Greek Orthodox, and the various forms of Protestantism, as well as orders of chivalry and the inquisition. Despite condemnation by the Catholic church, the work was a resounding success.
