Title: Globe Challenge (now Vendée Globe) solo round-the-world yacht race 1989 map Description: Globe Challenge. Course en solitaire sans escale 89/90. Départ le 26 décembre 1989 des Sables d’Olonne'. A map of the route of the first edition of what is now the Vendée Globe (originally called "The Globe Challenge"), the solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world yacht race, founded by Philippe Jeantot in 1989. Jeantot created the race as a more extreme alternative to the BOC Challenge, which allowed stops for rest and repairs. The first 1989–90 edition was won by Titouan Lamazou, with Jeantot finishing fourth. The race has since become the ultimate test of endurance for single-handed sailors. Held every four years since 1992, it starts and finishes in Les Sables-d'Olonne, in the Département of Vendée, France and is considered one of the most demanding challenges in ocean racing. .
