Title: Stark's Geographical… & Railway Chart of the United Kingdom 102x77cm c1851 map Description: Stark's Geographical, Historical, Chronological, Biographical, Mineralogical and Railway Chart of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland'. A rare and decorative map of the British Isles, known to be held in only two institutions. We can find no record of this map having been sold at auction. Probably published for the Great Exhibition. The borders of the map contain text panels of text listing important dates in the history of Britain from A.D.100 to 1851. Inner border panels contain brief descriptions of the English counties. The lower border contains four panels which detail the history of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. Running around the inside of the entire border is a family tree which traces the royal lineage all the way from Queen Victoria back to the Saxon King Egbert of A.D.627. Two comparative charts show the heights of Britain's mountains and the lengths of its rivers. Curiously, Ben Macdui is listed as Britain's highest peak and taller than Ben Nevis, although the Ordnance Survey had built a trig point on the summit in 1847, confirming Ben Nevis to be taller. by Stark, J.. The 1851 census information is provided; the final event referred to in the historical text is 1851. Queen Victoria's children are named in the family tree up to and including Arthur (born 1850), but not Leopold (born 1853). Large antique lithographic folding map, dissected, backed onto linen, with original colour. Size 102 x 78 cm | 40.0 x 30.5 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing.
