A large chart of the English Channel by Edmond (or Edmund) Halley. Best known for calculating the orbit of the eponymous Halley's Comet, he made also important and contributions to cartography, of which this map is one such original contribution, being the first map to show the direction (indicated by arrows) and timing of the tides (indicated by Roman numerals) on a map, as explained in the "Advertisment". There is an inset map of the Isle of Wight and Solent, and the coast from Hurst Castle to Bognor Regis on a larger scale, and inset plans of Plymouth Harbour and Falmouth Harbour.
