Title: Hoggar's City of Oxford plan "To the Chancellor, Master & Scholars…" 1850 map Description: To the Chancellor, Master & Scholars of the University, and the Mayor, Aldermen & Citizens of the City of Oxford, This Plan from Actual Survey is most respectfully Inscribed by Robert Syer Hoggar, Assoc. Inst. C.E. 1850'. A fine and detailed large-scale plan of Oxford in the mid-nineteenth century, surveyed and published by John Hoggar in 1850 — one of the earliest separately issued maps of the city to record its Victorian expansion beyond the medieval core. Hoggar’s plan provides a remarkably precise depiction of the colleges, university buildings, streets, and gardens, together with the surrounding suburbs of St Ebbe’s, St Clement’s, Jericho, and the developing districts along Banbury and Cowley Roads. The map is distinguished by the clarity of its architectural delineation and the inclusion of the Oxford to Rugby Railway (the Oxford–Banbury section opened in 1850) together with the proposed railway terminus, which was built and opened in 1852 — showing Oxford poised on the threshold of the industrial age. Industrial features include the St Ebbe’s Gasworks and the Iron Foundry adjacent to St Sepulchre’s. Technically precise and aesthetically balanced, Hoggar’s plan stands as one of the key printed records of Oxford at mid-century, capturing the city in transition between the Georgian university town and its later Victorian transformation. Issued separately, examples are infrequently encountered on the market.
