A large and decorative 19th-century reconstruction of pre-Reformation London, prized for its impressive scale and ornate Tudor Revival border. The map depicts the City and its suburbs as they stood in the reign of Henry VIII, showing churches, monasteries, and principal buildings before the Dissolution. A total of 436 buildings are numbered on the plan and identified in the accompanying index. Issued by the architect-antiquary William Newton to accompany his Historical and Topographical Memoir, it is finely executed: copperplate engraving by Thomas Sherratt, with the elaborate ornamental surround designed and printed by J.
