A striking and theatrical wartime serio-comic cartoon map by Cemal Nadir Güler, published in Cumhuriyet on 10 February 1944, celebrating French resistance and the threat to the Nazi occupation of the country in the latter stages of the Second World War. Germany is represented by a swastika dominating the country, but under threat from French resistance (represented by a civilian woman with a revolver taking an axe to the Swastika, and a series of sabotage explosions of factories and bridges), while the United States, represented by Uncle Sam, and the British are both poised in boats offshore ready to invade. Italy appears as a tortured figure, gored by both the Allies and Germany. Petain appears crushed below the swastika. The Spanish look on. Rich in symbolism and executed with Nadir’s characteristic combination of humour and political clarity, this 1944 cartoon captures Allied optimism and Turkish disapproval of Nazi Germany.
